So, picture this: We land in Canada, Toronto specifically, wide-eyed and ready for adventure. And let me tell you, Canada did not disappoint. From the get-go, we felt like I'd stumbled into a whirlwind of cool vibes, friendly faces, and some seriously breathtaking scenery. We felt home!

First off, diversity here is incredible. I'm talking about walking down the street and hearing a dozen different languages, smelling a dozen different cuisines – it's like a global party, and we loved every minute of it. Canada's got this awesome way of bringing people together from all corners of the globe, and it's pretty darn cool to be a part of it. And it’s more noticeable if you are in the big cities like we were: toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Halifax. Obviously, going to the country side, this sense of multiculturalism changes quite a bit.
Then there's the nature. Coming from a tropical place, but where we lived we had crappy weather and where skyscrapers are the norm, seeing those majestic Rockies and crystal-clear lakes was like stepping into a postcard. I've hiked, kayaked, and even tried my hand at skiing (let's just say I spent more time on my butt than on my skis, but hey, it's all part of the fun!).
And can we talk about maple syrup for a sec? I mean, who knew this stuff could be so versatile? We've had it on pancakes, ice cream, bacon – you name it. It's like the unofficial mascot of Canada, and I'm totally here for it. Also a delicious experience is going to a sugar shack (or cabana a sucre in Quebec), where everything is made around the maple culture. They serve delicious and heavy meal. Really worth it! Here's a list of good ones near Montreal.
In 2020, due to the pandemic, many non-essential businesses, including sugar shacks, had to close their doors for several months in Canada. This was particularly challenging for the maple syrup industry, as this is the time of year when sugar shacks typically welcome visitors to indulge in their delectable meals.
Fortunately, they came up with a solution: takeout options. We were able to swing by the sugar shack to pick up our favourite dishes and enjoy them at home. While my photography skills may not do the meal justice (LOL), I can assure you it was absolutely delicious. Plus, it felt great to support our local businesses during such a tough time.
Besides the good meals we get form time to time, you know what's been the best part?
The people. Canadians are some of the friendliest, most welcoming folks you'll ever meet. Although they have their way of being very on their own, once you get the chance to really know them, you’ll see how nice Canadians are. I was able to encounter an keep Canadian friends since we arrived in Canada, from school and work in Toronto and then after from another job in Montreal, all amazing and caring people.
Sure, there have been challenges – figuring out the healthcare system, finding affordable housing – but every bump in the road has just been another chance to learn and grow. And honestly, I wouldn't trade this adventure for anything…(read our post about leaving Canada)
So here's to Canada – the land of diversity, natural beauty, and maple syrup. If you’re a newbie, you’ll soon get the feeling this is just the beginning of one heck of an adventure.
Cheers to Canada!
