Packing Light for a Joyful Family Trip: Keep it Breezy with the Little Ones

Writer: This Abroad LifeThis Abroad Life

Alright, fellow parents, let's talk about the ultimate challenge: packing for a family vacay. With kids in tow, it's like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole – tricky, but not impossible!

Here are some laid-back tips to help you breeze through packing and keep the stress levels low:

1. Plan like a Boss: Before you start tossing random stuff into your suitcase, take a moment to jot down what you really need. Trust me, a little pre-planning goes a long way in avoiding the dreaded overpacking trap. (here’s my ultimate travel packing list)

2. Keep it Simple, Silly: When it comes to clothing, think versatile! Pack pieces that can be mixed and matched to create different looks. It's a bonus if they're wrinkle-resistant - no one has time to iron while on vacation! 😉

3. Squad up with Packing Cubes: Packing cubes are like the superheroes of organization – they save the day every time. Use them to separate clothes, toiletries, and all the random stuff you're bringing along. but be mindful of the random stuff, as these will take precious space in your luggage. Got a small bag? Ziplock bags are your BFFs! They're compact, versatile, and reusable – perfect for keeping your stuff organized on the go! 🎒♻️

4. Shoe Game: Minimize it: Shoes are sneaky space hogs, so keep them to a minimum. My recommendation is to choose one pair that goes with everything and maybe a pair of flip-flops or winter boots (it all depends on your destination) and leave the rest at home. For you kids,, sometimes, they can either go with the shoe on their feet or if you pack an extra pair, try to fit them inside of your shoes (in case you have big feet like I do…lol). Your suitcase will thank you.

5. Size Matters (for Toiletries): Ditch the bulky bottles and opt for travel-sized or refillable containers instead. And remember, less is more when it comes to toiletries – you can always buy them at your destination.

6. Leave Room for Souvenirs: Don't forget to leave some space in your suitcase for souvenirs, gifts and other goodies you'll pick up along the way. Trust me, you don't want to be playing Tetris with your suitcase on the way back.

7. Keep 'Em Busy: Packing light isn't just about stuff – it's also about keeping the kiddos entertained. Throw in a few lightweight toys, books, or games to keep them occupied during the flight and downtime. Pro tip: toddlers 3-4yo colouring books will do the trick; infants 1-2yo, mega blocks are great, just a few won’t take a lot of space; for newborns, just brace yourself during the flight and hope for the best 😄

8. Tech it Easy: Say goodbye to bulky guidebooks and hello to smartphones! Use apps and websites to plan your adventures on-the-go. And don't forget to load up on movies and games for those long travel days. I’m the kind of mom that don’t like the idea of screens to my kid, but sometimes that’s the only salvation.

9. Snack up: Oh, and don't forget the snacks. Hangry kids are nobody's idea of a good time, so make sure you have something handy to entertain their mouths.

10. Stroller-time: go light: If you need a stroller for your kiddos, opt for a lightweight option like an umbrella stroller. These gems are perfect for any adventure – they're foldable, lightweight, and budget-friendly. So if it breaks or gets misplaced (or the airline misplaces it), it won't put a dent in your wallet! 🌟

Another good option for strollers, is to rent at your destination. I found recently while prepping for a short trip to Copenhagen, the website Babonbo. They rent all the sorts of things for babies and kids. Really worth it!

So there you have it, parents – packing light doesn't have to be a pain in the neck. With these tips, you'll be ready to hit the road (or the skies) with ease and enjoy every moment of your family adventure.

Happy packing, and even happier travels! 🌴✈️🎒

Ciao!!
