Simplify Your Move: Tips to Declutter Your Home Before Moving Abroad

Writer: This Abroad LifeThis Abroad Life

Moving abroad is an exciting adventure, but it can also be overwhelming, especially when it comes to sorting through years of accumulated belongings. Whether you're relocating for work, study, or a new chapter in life, decluttering your home before the big move can make the transition smoother and more manageable.

Here are some tips to help you streamline your belongings and embark on your international journey with ease:

  1. Start Early: Moving abroad requires careful planning, so it's essential to start decluttering your home well in advance. Begin the process at least a few months before your move date to give yourself plenty of time to sort through your belongings systematically. One strategy that has greatly helped me in my planning process is creating a timeline or a work-back schedule. By mapping out my key milestones and tasks in advance, I gained a clearer understanding of what needs to be done and when. This structured approach not only helps me stay organized but also ensures that I stay on top of things.

  2. Take Inventory: Create a detailed inventory of everything you own, categorizing items by importance and necessity. Consider what you truly need and use regularly and what you can live without. This will help you prioritize what to keep, donate, sell, or discard…and don’t take it for granted, it’s a hard to task prioritizing your belongings.

  3. Marie Kondo Your Space: Again, it’s hard to do it, and trust me, I tried and it’s worth it the exercise. Embrace the principles of the KonMari method by asking yourself if each item sparks joy. If an item no longer brings you happiness or serves a purpose in your new life abroad, thank it for its service and let it go. Keep only the items that hold sentimental value or are essential for your journey.

  4. Sort by Category: To declutter effectively, tackle one category of items at a time, such as clothing, books, electronics, toys or kitchenware. This approach allows you to focus your efforts and make better decisions about what satys and what goes. The approach I took before moving to Sweden, was to go room by room in our home and label all the essentials that we would take with us. The only room I left for the last minute, was the little one. In that way, she would have her space intact for as long as possible.

  5. Consider Storage Solutions: If you're unsure about certain items but don't want to let go of them entirely, consider renting a storage unit or asking friends or family to store them temporarily. We did that, and we have some boxes that friends are holding for us…yeahh…we need to get back and retrieve our stuff…someday…LOL. This can give you peace of mind knowing that your belongings are safe while you're abroad.

  6. Hire a moving company: If you are moving abroad on a longer term, consider hiring a moving company to help you with packing and all the paperwork needed to ship your belongings abroad. We did it, it's expensive, but worth it!

  7. Sell or Donate Unwanted Items: Turn your clutter into cash by selling your items online or hosting a garage sale. I did an online garage sale (the idea came from a friend that had moved abroad a few months earlier), by creating a temporary website to give my friends a priority on the good stuff we had on sale. After, I posted the rest of our furniture and remaining items on Facebook Marketplace. It was a great way to "get rid" of a lot of things we couldn't take with us. Alternatively, consider donating items to charity organizations or giving them away to whomever may benefit from them. We did donate a ton of stuff at the end, but we left that for the final weeks before moving.

  8. Digitize Important Documents: Reduce paper clutter by digitizing important documents such as passports, birth certificates, and financial records. Store digital copies securely in the cloud or on a portable hard drive for easy access from anywhere in the world.

  9. Pack Light: When it comes to packing for your move abroad, less is often more. Take the essential items and pack strategically to maximize space and minimize excess baggage fees (read our post about travel light). Remember that you can always purchase necessities once you arrive at your destination.

Moving abroad is an opportunity to start fresh and embrace a simpler, more minimalist lifestyle. By decluttering your home before the move, you'll not only lighten your load but also set the stage for a smoother transition to your new life abroad, keeping the things that really have a meaning to you.

Happy decluttering and bon voyage!

Ciao!
