The hiccups: When plans change and how to adjust

Alright, folks, we’ve got some unexpected twists in our nomadic journey!

Despite all our careful planning, life had other ideas. Our time in Sweden is being cut short, but don’t worry—it’s for a super exciting reason. We’re on the move again, and guess where we’re heading? Back to Spain!

Yep, you heard that right. We’re returning to Barcelona, the city where our expat adventure first kicked off. Call it fate, destiny, or just plain luck, but it looks like life is bringing us full circle. This time, we’re hoping to stick around a little longer.

Now, don’t get me wrong—Sweden has been great, but let’s be honest, we didn’t quite fall in love with it. Maybe it’s because we landed here in the dead of winter, right after a super stressful period at work. New city, new jobs, and, oh yeah, a whole lot of freezing temperatures!

We moved to Sweden with nearly all our stuff, spending months packing, selling, and donating before the big move. The winter was absolutely brutal, and juggling a toddler with no daycare while managing heavy workloads? Not exactly a recipe for a good start. Our little one ended up with way too much TV time, and naps became our saving grace. Then, to top it all off, we lost our beloved Cookie, which was a gut punch we didn’t see coming.

That was our wake-up call—something had to give. We realized we needed to slow down and make some changes. Focus on priorities: quality time and less stress. After all, we didn’t start this nomadic life to get more stressed out! So, we decided it was time to head somewhere with milder winters, where we could actually enjoy life at a slower pace.

Since May, Sweden’s been showing its sunny side, and we’ve been enjoying it. Our neighbourhood is gorgeous this time of year, and we’re just a short stroll from the lake. Weekends are all about beach days and outdoor fun with the kiddo. But then, guess what? My job gave me the green light to work from Barcelona—turns out they have an office there! Cue the excitement…and the stress of planning another move so soon.

We took a quick trip to Barcelona to scope things out—checking out neighbourhoods, preschools, and figuring out the best way to hit the reset button on our lives. Because, let’s face it, that’s exactly what we need right now.

We’re really embracing the whole “reset” mindset. We need to slow down, focus more on our family, and stop trying to make everything perfect—because life’s never going to be perfect, right?

Here’s what’s making this move a bit easier:

- Daycare? Check! We’ve got a spot at a bilingual school, and we even have a start date. Our daughter’s been doing great with Swedish, but we’re excited for her to settle into a new routine, where English is the main language.

- Paperwork: Ugh, the usual red tape, but we’re making progress. Stay tuned for more on that.

- Packing: Thankfully, we don’t have furniture to haul this time, but there’s still plenty to pack. I'll write a new post about this.

- Temporary digs: We found a sweet apartment close to the new preschool, my job, and—bonus!—the beach. Life’s looking good.

So yeah, the sudden change of plans is working out pretty well. We’re getting our little one prepped for the move, and I’m feeling confident she’ll adapt just fine—she’s a pro at this by now! We’re taking a more chill approach to this move, keeping stress levels low and expectations realistic.

Stay tuned for more updates as we dive into our new chapter in Barcelona. Let’s see where this wild ride takes us next!
